Assignment 2 (English for Business & Science II)

I am going to dedicate this free topic blog post to present love/hate relationship with computers. This may sound strange as I currently is studying my final semester to be an IT-designer but there is nothing that can make me as happy as when something I have created on the computer works as it should and also nothing that can make me as angry as when it doesn’t work as it should.

Today I had an experience that made me furious. I came down to the living room, turned on the computer and sat down to check my e-mail but the only problem was that the only thing I could see on my screen was the mouse-pointer, nothing else. After a couple of minutes of cursing and swearing I got my installation-dvd into the computer and ran the repair program but that didn’t help at all. The screen was still black and I had to cook some food for my girlfriend for her lunch so I put the computer aside for maybe about an hour. Then, when I returned to the computer it suddenly just worked! Stupid computers!

On the other hand I truly realized that I am both addicted to and dependent of my computer and especially the internet. During the almost four hours without my computer working I felt totally isolated from the world. I also realized that this is not all good. Maybe even no good at all…

Keep computing!

  1. heh i can understand your frustration, computers can really be a pain.

Well the addiction you speak of is indeed scary, I can’t possible imagine an entire day without the internet. If the internet crashes for example or my pc starts to collapse, then that means that I must resort to books or actually go out more. :P. Just kidding or I am? No seriously, i think that our addiction really gives us a eye opener when we realize how much we really depend on it (like you did).

  2. Hi Danne,

I can relate to a lot of what you are writing, but I don't get violent and start cursing. :) But I have a friend that has no problem kicking the computers ass; smash the keyboard to pieces is no big thing. I'm more into solving the problem. My problem is that I’m so fixed that the problem solving is priority one. Even if I have to do something else like going away, my mind is still on the computer problem.

Then there is the computer addiction, most of us are addicted I’d say. Maybe there’s going to be a rehab centre for computer addicts in the future, I can’t see that we will decrease our use.

I read in a newspaper about one young boy who skipped school for three years, isolated himself with the computer. He threatened to commit suicide if he was forced to leave the computer and live a normal life. I think we will see more cases like that in the future.

Still there are more advantages than disadvantages with computers!

    Best regards

  3. Hi Daniel!

How did we manage before we had our computers? You are so right, we are addicted to our computers and I agree - not entirely sure that it is a good thing. Hehe, I also feel isolated if my computer doesn't work which is terrible!

I am trying to think of what life used to be before everyone got a computer - definitely spoke more often with my friends over the landline and life actually seemed a bit less stressed without a computer.

That said - I think having computer or internet access makes life very easy in terms of source information etc.

Very well written and much appreciated Blogg!!

    Cheers,

    Jeanette

  4. I can totally relate to what you are saying, I had the same problem the other day. I even got so frustrated so I went in and bought a new computer on Dustin. But the next day my computer worked again. However it is pretty sad how depended we are on computers these days. But like Daniel Silvén wrote, there are still more advantages than disadvantages with computers
