Blog assignment 2

My reaction to the film on how our consuming effects the enviorment is first of all this: I get nauseous by these american simplifications of everything just to make it sound as they are right and everyone else are wrong and just stupid of even thinking in another way. The keystones in the film probably right but I think it´s to easy to just say that if we stop consuming then everything will be top notch. If we stop consuming the hole worlds economy will break down and I wonder if that is what the lady in the film wants? I do not think so...

My suggestion is instead of just not buying stuff at all, buy stuff that is made as enviorment-freindly as possible. My believe is that we are not able to change the hole worlds way of shopping and consuming so instead of giving people like you and me bad conscience because we like having the newest and coolest things, force the manufacturers and businesses to create enviromental-freindly products by legislate laws for this.

I really hope we and by we I mean the hole worlds population will do something about this problem because I would not like to see my children and maybe even childrens children grow up in a world that previous generations messed up so bad that it is impossible to fix.

Hope it´s not to late...

  1. I concur that we cannot stop consuming entirely and it is probably a good idea to introduce laws that forces the companies to be greener, because they’ll won’t do it spontaneously themselves. Some materials can’t be reused or recycled and should therefore be forbidden to use in a product. As a consumer you should be able to recycle the whole thing. But I know that the companies which have these products or parts must have a return centre if the consumer can’t recycle it. The company is responsible for the disposal which we can’t recycle.

In the future we’ll see a lot of changes which hopefully will turn all this around.

  2. Do not really know what to respond to what you just typed. But you are right, clearly we want the latest goods. Mostly the new is better than the old. Take a new refrigerator, for example. A new refrigerator is much more nature-friendly than the old. So all the new stuff does not destroy nature. Of course we all want our children and grandchildren to have a good life but the question is whether we will be able to change us so much that we " returns " the nature as it was before.

  3. Isn't that an interesting thought: what will happen if we all stop consuming? The world economy will break down, obviuosly, but what will that mean exactly? How will it affect the human race as a species?

The human race lived for thousands of years before we had a world economy, or economy at all.

Well, going back to the way we lived before the industrial revolution is probably not the solution though, because we have gotten too used to this comfortable life. But sometimes it feels like the world would be a happier place if we could erase all the technological progress we made the last couple of hundred years...

  4. Hi Daniel,

I agree with what you're saying. The video gave a oversimplified and one-sided view of the system. Although this video was made to contribute to a noble cause, I found it nothing but dishonest.

  5. I don't know if forcing laws uppon the upon the manufacturers is the right way. We as consumers also has an responsibility to buy products that are enviroment-friendly. If we put this demands on the manufacturers they will have no other option then to produce products that are enviroment-friendly if they want to make a profit.
