Blog assignment 1

This is my reaction of the article that Andy presented for us:

This is really the way to get to all employees that do things they shouldn't in their work enviroment! While working this summer I learned that the only way to get things done on the job is to actually do them, not to surf around on a number of not workrelated websites, play games or chatt with a friend. Why do we (the employees) even have the privilege of having access to the internet at all, if the work we perform do not require this?

I can understand that this seems a little conservative but as presented in the article, 45% of all employees favorite time waster is to surf the web. To even have a "favorite" time waster seems to me almost absurd. My abolute opinion is that when you work, you work and if it is necessary to have all this software to keep it that way, i say: Install, install, install!

Thanks for now!

  1. If everybody loved (or at least liked) their jobs this wouldn't be a problem. But sadly we can't love every single job we have. Maybe we all should get paid based on what we actually accomplish at work? Then if you waste time doing things you shouldn't you're paycheck gets smaller. This could be problematic though, how do you measure how effective a teacher is, for instance? Even though there clearly are some problems I'm not convinced that surveillance is the right way to go.

About surfing the web as a time waster, sometimes a 5 minute break every now and then can make you even more effective! (but it sure is hard to keep at only 5 minutes, it easily grows to 10, 15 or maybe even 20 minutes.)

  2. In my opinion privacy (at work or school) is fundamental to an employee. An employee who is not trusted by the management can not perform well-low work morale- and therefor the surveillance brings it self down.

Surveillance in buses or in taxicabs is, on the other hand, a very necessary thing, in my opinion. In this case it is "crime preventing".

  3. I totally agree with you saying that if you want something to be done, you have to do it by yourself. It is quite obvious that the boss rather like snooping than actually help its workers to do their work as good as possible. As an employee you need to feel that your boss as well as other employees has some faith in what you are doing, to help you do an even better work in the future. In this specific case I would say the result might be the opposite. However it is difficult to judge whether your boss snoops, or really are interested in your work. Even though it is individual and depends on what kind of person you are, but the most of us human being at least has some kind of estimating ability to decide whether it is about snooping or interest!

  4. I agree with every single word you wrote. And just like you I noticed this summer while working that many of my co-workers were lazy and not doing their job. That leaves me and the other co-workers who do their job well, with a lot more to do. We work harder and more than some of the rest, but we all get the same amount of money at the end of the month.

So I think surveillance is great, install software, put up cameras and have guards monitoring the workers, you can have your personal integrity at home.
